A Digital Nomad Visa is a specialized residence permit that allows you to legally reside in a foreign country while working remotely for an employer or as a freelancer for clients based outside of that country. Unlike traditional tourist visas—which strictly prohibit local or remote work and only allow short stays (usually 30-90 days)—a digital nomad visa guarantees legal long-term residency (typically 6 months to over 2 years) without violating local employment laws.
It officially permits remote work based on foreign-sourced income, provided you do not compete in the local job market.
Allows a basic stay of 1 to 2 years, much longer than a visa-free tourist stay, with options to renew in many countries.
Makes it easy to open a local bank account, sign long-term residential leases, and obtain a resident registration card.
Many countries offer local income tax exemptions for short stays, or apply special reduced flat tax rates for digital nomads.

Unlike full-time employees, freelancers and solo entrepreneurs must prove the sustainability of their service contracts and the consistency of actual bank deposits rather than simply providing an employment contract. This is the core of the evaluation.
A retainer contract specifying a fixed monthly payment (e.g., "$X,000 per month for 1 year") scores much higher in income sustainability assessments than multiple short-term project contracts.
The amount stated in the contract, the invoiced amount, and the depositor name and amount in your bank statements must match exactly to avoid requests for further clarification or rejection.
Your contracts must explicitly include a clause stating, "This work is performed entirely remotely/online regardless of location," to rule out any suspicion of local employment intent.
Because freelance income can fluctuate monthly, submitting a certificate of deposit covering 6 to 12 months of living expenses alongside your income proof greatly strengthens your financial health assessment.
