Frequently Asked Questions: Schengen 90/180 Rule for Remote Workers
How does the Schengen 90/180 rolling window rule work in 2026?
Unlike a calendar reset on January 1st, the Schengen 90/180 rule uses a backward-looking rolling window. On any single day you are inside the Schengen Area, border systems (EES) count backward 180 days (including today). If you have been present in any combination of the 29 Schengen states for more than 90 days within that 180-day period, you are overstaying.
Do my arrival and departure days count toward the 90-day limit?
Yes. Even if your flight lands at 23:50 (11:50 PM) or departs at 00:15 (12:15 AM), both the calendar day of entry and the calendar day of exit count as full days spent inside the Schengen Area.
Are Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia part of the Schengen 90/180 count?
Yes. Croatia joined the Schengen zone in 2023, and both Bulgaria and Romania are fully integrated into the Schengen framework in 2026. Days spent in any of these countries count toward your combined 90-day allowance.
Does time spent on a Digital Nomad Visa or Type D Residence Permit count toward my 90 days?
No. Time spent inside the specific EU country that issued your National Long-Stay (Type D) Visa or Digital Nomad Residence Card is exempt from the 90/180 tourist limit. However, short trips to other Schengen countries outside your residence country remain subject to the 90/180 rule.
